Meet Meagan Holman

Bay View mom Meagan Holman knows the value of a quality public education.  She’s a product of public schools. Her husband, Eli Holman, is a proud MPS graduate and her four sons attend Fernwood Montessori School in MPS.

Raised by a nurse and the manager of a neighborhood auto repair shop, Meagan developed an early passion for education, public service and helping to strengthen her community. With the support of her family and teachers, Meagan attended Oberlin College in Ohio and went on to study at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, where she earned a Masters degree in Public Policy.

Meagan has emerged as a tireless problem solver and community advocate, helping her neighbors find solutions to their biggest challenges.

Meagan began her career with two years of public service in youth-oriented AmeriCorps programs.  As a non-profit consultant in Milwaukee, Meagan has worked with business, community, faith and school leaders to solve problems and get things done for Milwaukee families. She has worked with a wide array of local non-profits, like Hunger Task Force, the Wisconsin Health Project, St. Ann’s Center for Intergenerational Care, BoardStar, the Milwaukee Jewish Council for Community Relations, City Year Milwaukee and others.

She has also worked with Milwaukee community organizations and MPS leaders to help increase access to school nutrition, reduce the high school drop-out rate and keep students in school and on track.

Meagan’s Approach

Meagan believes a vibrant school district touches all of Milwaukee, from employers to homeowners to parents, not to mention the future leaders of our community: the 80,000 Milwaukee kids who are attending 180 MPS schools this year.

Meagan understands the challenges facing MPS today. As a parent, Meagan has a personal stake in strengthening Milwaukee’s schools and has seen firsthand where there are opportunities for improvement.  And from her work with local non-profits and MPS, she knows Milwaukee schools can’t endure more ideas that haven’t worked.

On the MPS Board, Meagan has used her experience as a mom, and her work with Milwaukee non-profits and MPS, to be a voice for parents, students, educators, and the community. Among her accomplishments in her first year on the School Board, Meagan has:

- Held a series of community meetings to bring attention to issues at Bay View Middle and High School, resulting in BVMHS's inclusion in the new SpringBoard Advanced Placement program across the district;

- Garnered support among the administration and her colleagues for budgetary flexibility for schools, leaving control of staffing in the hands of the Principals and Governance Councils that know their schools best;

and,

- Opened MPS's seventh Montessori School, Howard Avenue, and spearheaded the development of new Montessori options across the district in recognition of how these programs are meeting the needs of students and families today through mixed age classrooms, project-based learning, and improved academic outcomes.

Meagan’s unique experience has helped her bring fresh ideas that come from new voices, like involved parents, business leaders and community members.  Meagan is working everyday toward new solutions to MPS’ challenges to help students achieve, to keep Milwaukee’s workforce competitive in a changing economy, and to attract new jobs to Milwaukee.
